E’ stato insieme maestro di storia e cantore delle passioni che di generazione in generazione hanno costituito ciò di cui oggi siamo fatti.
Ha riempito un vuoto, ed è totalmente fuori strada chi vuol fare di lui un interprete di parte. Benigni è un uomo di sinistra e non lo ha mai nascosto. Ma la sua lectio magistralis non ha nulla a che spartire con la desolante faziosità che ha contagiato da tempo politici e intellettuali sempre schierati a priori, mai disposti a riconoscere la realtà se la realtà non coincide con il proprio interesse. Benigni non è uomo che divide per chi lo guarda con occhi onesti. Giovedì sera, appena terminata la performance di Benigni, il ministro La Russa - che non è certo un uomo di sinistra - è andato a dar la mano al direttore artistico del festival, Gianmarco Mazzi: e in quel gesto, fatto in un silenzio che è parso solenne, è sembrato di vedere un sincero ringraziamento per quel che Sanremo aveva regalato agli italiani.
Benigni sa far ridere e sa far piangere, e chi sa far ridere e far piangere tocca le corde più profonde dell’umano. Un altro grande dello spettacolo, Mogol, non ha avuto torto ieri in conferenza stampa ad accostarlo a Chaplin, e a dire che l’altra sera Benigni ha risvegliato un sentimento di amor patrio che non era morto, ma solo sopito.
Accanto al viva l’Italia dell’altra sera sale dal cuore anche un viva Benigni, comico e maestro. E suscita speranza vedere anche comici più giovani come Luca e Paolo. A chi rimproverava loro di aver letto un brano di Gramsci, e quindi di un uomo di parte, Luca e Paolo hanno risposto che uno degli autori che hanno suggerito quel brano è di Comunione e Liberazione, non un comunista: a dimostrazione che per chi ragiona senza pregiudizi conta più la sostanza di un testo che la persona che l’ha scritto.
I comici volano più alto di chi dovrebbe guidarci per ruolo istituzionale. Ma forse questa, più a misfortune, is another testimony of how the infinite resources of a country that someone would not want to celebrate.
